Aftermorethanadecadeworkingonhisown,McKenzieteamedupwithamannamedScottaboutDecember1873.ThetwomenoperatedMcKenzie&ScottsPhotographicGalleryonQueenSt.untilaboutMay1875whenMr.Scottappearstohaveleft.Henryenjoyedahighlysuccessfulphotographiccareer,creatingthousandsoftrue-to-lifepicturesoffamilies,homesandstreetscenes. HenrysnephewFrankMcKenziejoinedthebusinessasaphotographerandlatertookoverthebusiness.In1895heclosedthegalleryendingasuccessfulventurefortheMcKenziesofalmost30years.The Leonards photography erea Althoughthereisnosubstantialdocumentation,itissaidthatJamesLeonardwasthetownsfirstandmostwellknownphotographerformorethan30years. HewasborninAugust1832inEngland,andasayoungmanimmigratedtoCanada.AfterarrivinginPortPerryinthelate1850s,hereportedlyopenedasmallphotographystudiointhevillage. WhenJameswas23yearsoldhemarriedAramintaEwers,thedaughterofAbelW.Ewers,oneofthetownsmostrespectedpioneermunicipalofficials. InSeptember1874heconstructedanewbuildingonPerryStreet,atthecornerofQueenStreet,anditwasherehepracticedhistradefortheremainderofhislife.HepassedwayonJanuary8,1884,at51yearsofage,leavingtheLeonardgalleryinthehandsofhissonWilliam. Beforejoininghisfather,WilliamwasateacherandtaughtinschoolsatManchester,ClaremontandScugogIsland.Whileheenjoyedasuccessfulcareerinteachingitwasphotographythatinterestedhimmost. Williamleftteachingandjoinedhisfathersbusines,wherehebecameanaccomplishedphotographerinhisownrights.ItisWilliamwhoisresponsibleformanyofthepicturesofpersonalities,familiesandtownscenesfromtheearlypartofthecenturywhichcanbefoundintheScugogShoresVillageMuseumtoday. InJuly1884,Leonardsbuildingwasdestroyedbyfire,butherebuiltonhisPerryStreetproperty.Laterhepurchasedthebuildingsadjoininghistothesouth,andtheentirebuildingbecameknownastheLeonardBlock. HemaintainedhisgallerylocatedintheoriginalLeonardbuildingnearthecornerofQueenandPerrySt.,withitsentranceoffofPerrySt.WilliamLeonarddiedin1947at92yearsofage,endingtheglorydaysforPortPerrysearliestphotographers.Port Perrys less known galleries TherewereafewotherphotographerssetupinPortPerryandPrinceAlbertduringthe1800s,butmostdidnotremaininbusinessforlong. FREDERICK N. POOLoperatedhisstudioinPortPerryduringthe1880s,butafterashorttimeinbusiness,soldhisgallerytoHenryJ.ByersinMarch1890. HENRY J. BYERSisreportedtohavehadathoroughknowledgeofthebusinessandgreatartisticskills,havingworkedinmanystudiosbeforecomingtoPortPerry. HeundoutedlyfoundthecompetitionofthetownstrustedphotographerWilliamLeonardtoomuch,anditwasntlongbeforeheclosedhisgalleryandmovedtoPortHope. G. BRUCEopenedhisPictureGalleryinPrinceAlbertinSeptember1868.ThegallerywasabovethestoreofWilliamM.Wightman. HENRY C.
