FOCUS - FEBRUARY 2016 13 Volunteer firefighters are hired by the Fire Department as needed to main- tain an appropriate number at each station. Volunteer firefighters are ini- tially hired as probationary firefighters. They complete approximately 60 hours of training on such topics as personal protective equipment firefighter safety fire behavior fire streams communica- tions and first aid. Upon completion of this initial introductory training they begin responding to emergency calls and attend weekly training. During their probationary year volunteer fire- fighters are required to obtain a DZ licence if they dont already have this as well as to spend at least 8 hours in fire prevention activities and 8 hours incommunityevents.Probationaryfire- fighters bring enthusiasm and an eager- ness to learn. We were happy to have 11 firefighters complete their probationary year in 2015. We also look forward to training 5 new firefighters starting this month.
